5 Reasons Why Winter In-Home Sessions Are The Best | Long Island & New York City Documentary Family Photographer

Fall is winding down and we are catapulting toward the holidays. Most people think of fall as the optimal time for a family photography session, but can I tell you a secret? I love winter sessions. Love them! Not just client sessions, but also photographing my own family members. There is just something about winter that screams "family" to me. If the warmer months are for travel and adventure, then the colder months are when everyone comes back home to commune together. What better time to capture the relationships and connection between family members? What better time to document the heart of your home?

1. Indoor winter activities promote togetherness.

What are your favorite activities when the weather outside "is frightful"? Baking? Cooking? Playing cards? Board games? Reading a book aloud to the kids? Putting a puzzle together? Sitting by the fire? Making hot chocolate? Arts and crafts project? Making a blanket fort? Playing musical instruments? Drinking a hot toddy? There is nothing like a cold day outside to bring family together inside. And these indoor activities - they make for great photographs!

2. Winter is filled with holiday gatherings and reconnecting with friends and family.

Whether you are getting together to celebrate a holiday, or just having a Sunday brunch, winter is the perfect time to reconnect with loved ones - what better time to get some photographs of everyone together?

3. Because Winter is THE COZIEST!

No better time for cuddling up in fluffy blankets or snuggling tight with family members. Lighting the fire, turning on lamps that give off a cozy warm light or the twinkling Christmas tree lights, and watching the snow fall gently outside.

4. That LIGHT though!

Directional, moody winter light is my FAVORITE. And the early golden sunset with its deep shadows... heaven.

5. Winter outdoor activities are fun, too!

Get bundled up and go outside! From sledding, to building a snowman, to snowball fights - winter outside is a whole lot of fun, too!
